Une oi the nicest ways people can show their appreciation of one another is to give memorial gifts to a hospital .... This rpring weather is putting the urge in everyone to clean up and paint up. It’s going on all over the na tion. That advertisement of R. H. Brady points out another valuable point in the clean-up campaign. A clean place is in less danger of catching fire. The Duke Power ad Wednesday emphasized the value of more light in a cleaner place that has been painted. . , . $100 WEEK GOAL “In maintaining the high morale of the American Army, the Red Jross must play an important part,” says General of the Army George C. Marshall, Secretary of Defense. “As our armed forces are in creased in numbers, the work of the Red Cross for servicemen and their families and for hospitalized veterans must be correspondingly increased,” said General Marshall. "And m addition, we are called on to coordinate the procurement of blood for all the armed services. “The Red Cross has been called on to recruit and train 250,000 vol unteer nurses’ aids; hundreds of thousands of housewives in home nursing; and twenty million men and women in first aid Work. That involves a tremendous organized ef fort in which every one of us must play a part. “These new responsibilities have been accepted by the Red Cross as a necessary obligation, a duty. This is the time for positive ac tion. When you are asked to take part and to contribute, I feel sure that you will do so generously. Our country needs the Red Cross and the Red Cross requires our support.” The campaign to raise $5,200 in Polk County is now underway. 35 canvassers are hard at work call ing on everyone. Because of the 40% increase over last year’s goal, larger contributions are required. More than two thirds of the $5,200 goal will remain in Polk County. Contributions may be sent to the 'Tryon Bank & Trust Co. Checks should be made out to the Red Cross. Membership cards and buttons will be sent those con tributing more than the $1 member ship fee.
